Bombs for Groms – Mini Swell in the Gulf

There is nothing quite like putting on a swimsuit to go for a surf.  For lovers of surfing and those who wish to share what they love with the people they care about, this is the time to do it.  The infusion of the love of surfing with the love of all things beachy is what makes this sport so special to so many people. There are some really awesome things about the beach during the summer that are ideal for introducing people to the sport. The summertime especially, is different from the winter.  Unlike the winter, you can really slow down and appreciate the beach.  The sights, the sounds, the people, et cetera.  The white and finely ground sands are one of the major draws.  Its fine texture makes in great for walking on and playing in, for making footprints in the sand.

What’s also great about the summer is, your not rushing from your car to the water and back again, just to stay warm.  Walk slowly.  Look at the sand dunes.  Notice animals.  Look at the flowers in bloom.  Bring a cooler with ice cold drinks and an umbrella to sit under.  Bury a friend in the sand.  Just enjoy it. Small summer swells at the beach are the best time to introduce children under 12 to surfing.  Many swells in the summertime, like the one today and yesterday, are small windswells that are a good size for our favorite pastime.  Especially for youth, it is crucial that the waves be the right size for learning.  You want children to be comfortable paddling into the ocean when introducing them to the sport, because even in small surf there is a good chance they will fall off the board and get water up their nose and saltwater in their eyes.  However the bathtub like conditions of the summer are comfortable swimming temperatures for anyone.  Their comfort paddling out and the fun they can have surfing will outweigh other drawbacks.   And soon after catching their first waves, children introduced to surfing under these conditions will quickly fall in love with the sport.  Not long after that they’ll be looking for bigger and better waves.
