Surf Etiquette Basics

Surf Etiquette can be a terribly complex topic.  This short list is written by someone with a continuous 15+ years of surfing experience around the state of Florida, and an ongoing love hate relationship with many overcrowded gulf coast surf spots.

These rules have not been organized in any particular way.  You won’t find the rules in descending order of importance, because different people and different locations place different significance on rules based on different things.  These are basic rules for surfers learning the sport.

It’s a short list, because it’s important for you to make your own judgements about what’s right and wrong. And because, any set of rules are subject to reasoned argumentation which can throw a real wrench in your understanding of correct behavior. This short list will help guide you through your surfing experience.

Rule 1: Safety

Safety 1: Don’t drop in.

If you see someone catching a wave who is closer to the peak, give them the right of way.  Safely exit a wave if you drop in.  This rule also falls under giving experienced surfers the enjoyment of the full ride.

Safety 2: Don’t ditch your board.

Your board can be a danger to others. When bouncing around in the whitewash, keep your board with you; Lay on it, sit on it, hold it, do whatever you have to do to keep it from crashing into another surfer.

Safety 3: Consider the wave.

You should make an assessment about the wave on an ongoing basis.  Consider the way it breaks, who’s riding it, and in what potential situations a collision or dangerous situation could occur.

Rule 2: Cultural Values

This one rule can vary in many different ways.  Surfers opinions, social norms, and a host of other factors are critically important unwritten rules to consider, but won’t make or break your day at the beach. Two examples of cultural values are the ideas of enjoying a pure life (Caribbean)  and respect (Hawaii).

Rule 3: Have Fun

This is an easy one.  Enjoy your time in the water.  Froth on good waves, and be stoked on other peoples waves. Have as much fun as you possibly can!
