Cold Front: (Updated Friday) Big Spring Front Number Two Sun/Mon, 04/15/18

The second big cold front of spring is just about 3 days away. As the big cold front makes its way across the gulf on Sunday morning the south winds are expected to increase. By evening, right before the front comes through, the winds turn west southwest, and could be super gusty. This model is showing sustained winds at 25 knots right along the boundary. That means even stronger gusts. The next morning, Monday morning, the winds gust onshore from the northwest, dropping through the day. There doesn’t appear to be much of a cleanup, but maybe a small glassy wave on Tuesday.

The weather temps noticeably drop behind this front. This could be a 10 degree or more drop in air temperatures. Sunday afternoon evening should still be pretty warm. Monday during the day the high drops to around 72°, with upper 50s first thing that morning. The water’s up to 73° at Pier 60, but will be dropping overnight on Sunday night. The rain coverage will be super high as the front rolls through the area.

Update: Tuesday morning will have a really fun cleanup. North winds with 3-5 foot seas.  It’s gonna be fullsuit weather with temps in the mid 50s.

The biggest surf will be Sunday right before sunset, then Monday morning. My guess is that this one will be the last big cold front of the 2017-2018 surf season.

Cold Front: A Big One On Monday 03/12/2018

A stronger cold front is comin a knockin. Just on our doorstep, Monday afternoon we’ll watch a big cold front move into the gulf. Spring was here for a short while, but it seems to be disappearing into the sunrise as we approach the middle of March with water temperatures down below 65° again today. Monday around mid-day surf will be rising towards heights of head high. Monday evening the surf peaks with the biggest waveheights and warmest temperatures. Tuesday morning will be a smooth morning at south facing beaches. Around 3am the winds shift from the northwest to the north leaving a northwest swell with offshore winds and temps in the mid 50s.

Weather Forecast: Second Big Cold Front of Fall

Mid-day Friday the surf comes up with the arrival of a significant cold front. Surf will start filling in as the west southwest winds across the middle gulf increase prior to the arrival of the frontal boundary. This should be a fun southy, waist high or better before the front. As early as noon we could be able to surf from all that southwest wind. The next morning, on Saturday, the northwest winds significantly increase in offshore waters.  At the coast, surf will be in the head high plus range with lighter 15+ knot winds. Surf’s up all day on Saturday.  Overnight the winds gust from the north, then switch northeast sometime before or right around sunrise.  Sunday morning a small clean wave and strong side-offshore wind will remain.

The water temperature is currently around 71° in Clearwater, and has been there since the big cool down of the first cold front.  The Fall/Winter pattern continues as temperatures cool again behind this significant cold front.  Friday and Saturday we see a high just above 60°.  Dawn patrollers and sunset gazers will feel things cool off with lows upwards of 49° in the overnight hours.  There was a big full moon phase with strong tides, but we’re getting further away from those bigger tidal swings as you can see in the chart that takes us through Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
